Note: 2

William Haywood died July 8, 1900 and is buried at Elmsdale. His wife Jane and
son Walter then ran the Haywood Mill trying to sell it as reported in the Island
Farmer March 18,1903: "Mrs. Jane Haywood, wife of William Haywood, Elmsdale,
has her mill and farm for sale, property at Elmsdale consisting of grist mill, oat mill,
dwelling house, barn and piggery, all in good repair, also 24 acres of land in a high
state of cultivation."
It is not certain how long Walter and Jane Haywood actually ran the William Haywood
mill, but eventually another son of William Haywood and Jane Platts, William
Johnston Haywood bought the mill and began to expand and improve it. He had
learned to be a miller at his grandfather Thomas Haywood's mill near Tignish then
later moved to Elmsdale. In 1909 Johnston Haywood had a dam and carding mill
between the William Wallace Sr. mill and Huntley, off the Oliver Road. The Island
Farmer October 22,1913 stated:
Mr. Johnston Haywood of Elmsdale has purchased from .. .Fairbanks Company of Canada, the Great
Midget Harole Roller Mill. This mill has been installed by one of the best millers on the Island, Mr.
C.W. Ives of Try on. There will be a capacity of one barrel of flour per hour.. .Mr. Haywood is one of
the best millers up west...
