Note

James Humphrey married twice, and had several children - the majority dying young. Most were buried in the Margate cemetery.

The Islander April 1852: On the 1st inst., by the Rev. F. Smallwood, Mr. James Humphries, to Miss Catharine Mugridge, both of Lot 19.

In the 1861 census, 1 person had been born in Scotland and the other four on the Island. There was a married couple and 2 boys and one girl between 6-15, who were probably William and Charles, and Anne Maria.

James and his second wife Margaret were in the 1881 census with James' mother Jannet B. Humphrey, who was 80. Son Charles Bowman was living in Moncton. There was a William Humphrey who had a son George Daniel in 1878 who was baptized in Margate, and a daughter who died young in Kensington, but I have not been able to make the connection to this family.

In an accident in 1899, at age of 70. James put his farm up for sale in 1913. However, I was unable to find his obituary in the Guardian newspaper. His second wife's obituary did not name any surviving step-children or children.

On the 1901 census, James claimed that he had emigrated in 1869, but that must be an error because he married his first wife in 1842 on the Island and he was in the 1861 census.
