Nellie's date of birth on the 1901 Canadian census was 19 September 1816 (age 84), although she gave 1825 on earlier census records and her death record said born about 1827.

Her parents were said to be HUGH MACARTHUR and HELEN (or Nellie) RAMSAY. If the date of birth on her death record is correct, b. 1827, then she would have been born after their marriage. However, if the date on the 1901 census was correct, Helen Ramsay would have been too young to be her mother. Depending on her date of birth, she could fit with the family of Hugh McArthur and his first wife, Nancy Ramsay, or second wife, Peggy Murray. However, she wasn't involved in signing the land agreement with the other children of Hugh, so that seems less likely.

Nellie married James Ellis in 1846. The names they gave their children weren't a clue as to her parentage.

On the 1891 census, she said both of her parents were born on the Island.

After the death of her husband, she went to live in Westmorland, New Brunswick with her son William.

Nellie Ellis, b. PEI died in Peticodiac, New Brunswick in 1905 at age 78.
