My Family Tree

George Dyment, also known as George McCarter Dymond, was born on 2 February 1851 in Prince County Prince Edward Island, the son of William Dyment and Effie McArthur. In the PEI Baptismal Index, his parents names were reversed (Effy Dymont and William McArthur).

According to the Genealogies of the Families of Cohasset, Massachusetts (1909) and his death certificate, his year of birth was 1849, although George himself gave dates ranging from 1852-1854 on different census forms. In the 1881 census, he was two years younger than his wife, who was born in 1852. In the 1900 US census, he gave his birthday as August 1852, and was the same age as his wife Sarah.

In 1875, George had married Sarah Jane Harris. The marriage was performed by Rev. C. Fraser, West Cape, with Margaret Fraser and Isaac Harris as witnesses. Sarah Jane, born September 1852, Prince Co, P.E.I., was the daughter of William Harris and Elizabeth Gay.

In the P.E.I. census of 1881 George (27) and Sarah (29) were living with his parents William and Effe Dyment, and their children: Bertrium age 6, Elizabeth age 5, Ellen age 4, Jane age 2, Swabey age 1 and Robert age 2 months. In 1891 the family was still living in Lot 7 (Bertrum, Elizabeth, Eleanor, Jane, Swabey, Alvin, John, Robert, Walter, Annie, and Loretta). George was farming, and the family was living in a one and a half story house with 5 rooms. There was a land conveyance of 73 acres from Augustus Cain, probably the husband of George's sister Elizabeth, to George in March 1891. It is possible from the names around him on the census record that George was living on his father's farm.

In 1895 they moved to the United States. George found work as a house painter.

In the 1900 US census, they had been married for 25 years. Sarah stated on the Federal Census of 1900 that she had had 14 children, 12 living. The children who were living with the family in the United States that year were: Jane (21), George (20, a teamster), Alvin (19, a house painter), John (18, a blacksmith),Robert (16, plumber), Walter (13, at school), Annie B. (11, at school), Loretta (9, at school), William E. (1894), and Charles H (1895). One of the two children who died was Thomas, and all of the others can be accounted for in 1900, except for Bertrum. Most genealogies give his date of death as 1955/56, but there is no record of Bertrum in US or Canadian census records after the 1891 census, which argues for him being one of the children who died before 1900.

Effie, age 85, was living with the family.

George died 30 Oct 1905 in Cohasset Massachusetts at the age of 56.

Sarah was widowed in the 1910 census, and still at home were John, Robert, Annie, Loretta, William E., and Charles H. In the 1920 Federal Census, children at home were John (34), Charles and Annie (30). Sarah died 27 Apr 1938, Cohasset, Norfolk Co, Massachusetts. According to a clipping from the Boston Globe newspaper, the funeral of Mrs Sarah Harris Dyment, age 87, was in 1938.
