Notes

Note

Janet was not in the PEI Baptismal Index. She was living in the household of John and Agnes in the 1881 census, but not in 1891. Janet was age 15 in 1881.

It is possible that she was the Janet B. McDonald from Charlottetown PEI, parents John and Agnes, who married George E. T. Bacon, son of Silas and Frances, in Boston Massachusetts 15 September 1888. Janet was 22 and George was 25.

I couldn't find another Janet McDonald with parents John and Agnes in the PEI Baptismal Index or in the 1881 census in Charlottetown. There was only one marriage of a John McDonald to an Agnes that fit with her date of birth, and the age of Janet McDonald fit with the 1881 census.

After that I wasn't able to find them in US census records under the name Bacon. I did find a George and Janet B. Hosmer that fit this couple in every other respect.

There is book on the genealogies of families from Dover Mass, which includes the family of Silas and Frances Bacon- but only one adopted daughter Katherine is listed, although given the date of publication George should have been included as well. If George had been fostered by the family, rather than adopted, he may have reverted to his birth name after his marriage.

But is that such a stretch, from Bacon to Hosmer? Although George's birth was reported as being in 1863, he was not with Silas and Frances in the 1865 Massachusetts census. But George Edmund Hosmer, born 1863, was living with his parents in the same town. In the 1870 US census, George E. Bacon appears in the family of Silas and Francis. Other children of Alonzo and Ann Marie (Alexander) Hosmer were living with her parents - but not George.

I also wasn't able to find a marriage between a George Hosmer and a Jane/Janet/Jeanette in the late 1880s. So it seems that when one George appears, the other disappears. George E. Hosmer was born 12 Feb 1863.

If this is the right couple, they had no children of their own but adopted Herbert E. Hosmer. Herbert was living with the widowed Jeanette Hosmer in the 1930 US census in Boston.

I found a Jeanette Hosmer of the right age in the Boston State Hospital in the 1940 US census. This is possibly the Jeanette Hosmer who died in Boston in 1950. The death certificate confirms that Jeanette Hosmer was the widow of George E., born on the Island, and was age 83 when she died.
