He was a Methodist; both of his parents were born on the Island. He wasn't living in the same area of Lot 6 in 1881.

The history of O'Leary says:

According to archival information, six blacksmiths operated in O'Leary before 1900, but the location of operations for most of them is unknown. They were Melvin MacAusland, Herman Adams, William Hayes, J.M. MacDonald, Hiram Woodside, and William Ellis (1899-1908).

William would easily fit in the family of Robert Ellis and Harriet Raynor, who were married in 1862, but their first recorded child was in 1866. Robert moved to O'Leary around the same time as William. William predeceased Robert, so his absence from Robert's obit is easily explained.
