Robert Milligan (1784-1872)
At age thirty-five, Robert Milligan left his home in Dumfrieshire, Scotand for Prince Edward Island. Accompanying him were his wife, Margaret Caven and at least four children. Robert and Margaret settled in St. Eleanor's and became involved with the Presbyterian Church in Belmont. Within three years of immigrating to the Island, Mr. Milligan was inducted as one of the four original elders of the Lot 16 Presbyterian Church.
Robert and Margaret had ten children, eight of whom survived to adulthood. The youngest child named Mary, (1825-1907) was married to Peter MacLaurin and they lived in Lot 16.
Margaret Milligan died in 1829 at the age of forty-two and the following year 1830, Robert married Elizabeth MacDougall (1807-1895). [marriage record says Robert Milligan of Lot 17 and Elizabeth McDougall of Lot 16] Together they had eleven children; the youngest, Caleb, was borm in 1851 when Robert would have been sixty-six years of age.
Robert and Elizabeth moved to Freeland (Lot 11) in 1861. It was here that he died February 3, 1872 in his eighty-eighth year. A portion of his obituary read:
He leaves to mourn his second wife, Elizabeth MacDougall, who has been partner of his joys and sorrows and seventeen of his twenty children still survive. Fifty grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

John Milligan married Margaret Sloan in Dumfries, Scotland in 1783. They had ten children; Robert, David, James, Helen, Alexander, John, Mary, Janet, Thomas and Anthony.
John was buried in Lot 16 cemetery in 1844.
Robert, their son married Margaret Caven in 1807 in Scotland. Their
children were: Nathaniel, Margaret, Alexander, Douglas, John, Robert, David
land Mary.
Robert's second marriage was to Elizabeth MacDougald in 1830.
Their family was; Helen (Mrs. Edward Waite) Traveller's Rest, David, Thomas
who died at two years, James, William, Elizabeth, Jane, Rebecca, Caleb and
Ann.
Douglas, a son of Robert's first family built carts and wooden pumps.
