Notes
Note
In the History of the Ellis Family, the author said that Mary Ann Ellis married John Rendle or Reynolds. Baptismal records for the children of Mary Ann Ellis and her husband were under John and William. I believe, on balance, that her husband was William Rendle.
John was the eldest son - his father William was a shipwright from New Bideford on his baptismal record.
There is only one household in the 1841 census that is close: William Reynolds or Raynolds, in Lot 12, a ship carpenter. He had a household of 8: a man between 45-60 and a woman between 16-45, and 3 males under 16 and 5 females under 16. Two were born in England, and 8 on the Island; all were Church of England.
There was a death record in the Port Hill Church of England records in 1852 that could be William:
________ Rendle, of Bideford Yard, Lot 12. He was an old and respectable inhabitant.
Wm. Reynalds was buried in St. James Cemetery in Port Hill.
John Rendle petitioned the courts to administer the estate of his late father, William Rendle, a farmer in Lot 12, who died on 28 November last (letter dated December 1853 - did he mean November 1852 or 1853?). William had 3 sons, of whom the petitioner John was the eldest and 5 daughters, but no wife surviving. John made the petition with William Matthews, farmer, Malpeque and Charles Rayner, Shipwright. (note - John signed the papers as "John Rendle") Admin R-23
William Rendle, Lot 12 Lib 86, Folio 494 Land Conveyance Records - concerning property in Lot 12, near the Goodwood River, dated 1 Oct 1845. John Rendle signed for his late father, 5 April 1864, and the document was registered October 1866. The document does not give Rendle's occupation, as some conveyance records did. John conveyed the property - about 83 acres - to William Richards, and between the Lakes Map and Meacham's Atlas, the property seems to have been just below Smelt Creek on the Goodwood River.
