Note
William emigrated in 1836, at the age of 16, with his family.
On the 2d January inst., at New London, by the Rev. Richard Cotton, Mr. William Johnston, to Grace, second daughter of Mr. Thomas Burrows, junr., both of the same place. (the Islander 17 Jan 1851) Witnesses at the marriage were Samuel Burrows, John Johnstone and James Campbell.
None of their children were in the PEI Baptismal Index. William's obituary said 2 daughters and 2 sons survived him.
After Grace died, he remarried:
JAN. 04, 1869, MARRIED AT SUMMERSIDE ON TUESDAY THE 29TH ULT., WM. JOHNSTON, (merchant), OF NEW LONDON TO MARY ROGERS, OF BEDEQUE. (Summerside Progress from the Island Register)
In the 1891 census William was living with his second wife Mary , as well as son Andrew, Andrew's wife Janie, and a two month old infant.
From his obituary:
He farmed and conducted a general store. Although dealing with hundreds and losing considerable by many, he never could be induced to resort to the law to collect a debt. He was survived by his wife, and two sons (Andrew and John, of Long River) and two daughters (Mrs. Richard Bagnall, New Glasgow and Mrs. Rev. W.A. Mason.)
